Some Information on Coin Values
The daily bread and butter of coin buying and selling for the professional consists mainly of processing 90% U.S. silver coins, common silver dollars, common circulated small coins, and scrap gold.

90% silver coins that are worth only their silver value are typicaly pre 1964 Walker, Franklin, and Kennedy halves, Washington quarters, and Mercury or Roosevelt dimes. 1965 to 1970 Kennedy halves are 40% silver and have an actual silver weight of .1479 oz Troy each. Better dates do exist but most coins that come in are commons that end up in silver bags.  A good way to evaluate coins yourself is to buy A Guide Book of United States Coins by R.S. Yeoman.

Fractional Currency Shield History

The advent of The Civil War created a shortage of gold and silver coin because of hoarding. Americans knew that their paper currency could be rendered worthless to defeat as hard currency disappeared. Many used postage to make change. To solve this, the government created emergency small denomination paper money in 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50 cent denominations. These educational fractional shield displays were sold to banks for the purpose of identifying legitimate notes.

Counterfeit Coin Epedimic
WARNING!  Counterfeit silver dollars and large foreign coins from China are common. Typically, these coins will be offered by people on the street claiming to be in need of money for an emergency or by vendors at swap meets. To the novice they look very convincing. Please see the pictures posted.
